PepTcell is a biotech company with its R&D facilities based near Bicester (Oxfordshire).
The company has a primary interest in the development of a new class of synthetic vaccines against viral (Influenza, HIV, Hepatitis B & C, Rotavirus) and protozoal (Malaria and Trypanosoma) infections.
PepTcell also has an interest in oncology and is currently developing a new cytotoxic therapy against breast cancer. Through the work of its subsidiary companies, Biocopea and Tangent Reprofiling, PepTcell is also involved in drug reprofiling with an specific focus in the areas of respiratory and inflammatory diseases as well as oncology.
The company currently has two drugs in Phase I clinical trials and is seeking to recruit a new member of staff to strengthen its pre-clinical R&D team.
This individual must have a MSc or PhD qualification preferably in immunology, cell biology and/or infectious diseases. This individual must also have at least two to three years practical experience in the laboratory. In the case of a PhD candidate, we would prefer that to cover at least one year post award of the degree.
It is essential that candidates have a good working knowledge of all of the following three (3) key techniques: (1) Tissue culture, (2) ELISA and (3) assays for immune function (e.g. cell proliferation, cell viability, cytokine production, etc) using mouse lymphoid tissue (i.e. spleens and/or lymph nodes) and/or human PBMCs. Some knowledge of additional techniques in areas such as molecular biology (e.g. PCR, SDS-PAGE, etc) and biochemical analysis (e.g. metabolite analysis) would be valued, but is not essential.
Several of PepTcell’s projects involve the use of human pathogens and hence candidates must have an awareness, and preferably experience (although this is not an absolute requirement) of working with infectious materials under Containment Class II conditions.
Above all, we are looking for somebody who is flexible, likes a challenge and can think independently. The attribute of being “capable to think” must be emphasized as the successful candidate must be able to construct, defend and challenge an argument, whilst at the same time being able to modify his/her preconceptions in order to drive a project forward.
The position is available from January 2010 and the remuneration package, which will be commensurate to the candidate’s experience and qualifications, will be in the range of £28,000-30,000 per year.
